How old are you and how long have you been riding bmx?
I am 21 years old and have been riding bmx for 7 years. Bikes since I was 6.

What is your favorite spot in the city to ride?
Buffalo State. Right infront of the student union.

How is your bike set up?
Fly components except back wheel stem and bars Sunday Bars Animal stem oddysey rims to profile hub.

How do you feel about riding through Buffalo winters?
Ive done it. I don’t ever want to do it again. I did a paper route for 3 or 4 years. Rode a mountain bike and hated it. It completely destroyed each bike every year.

Who inspires you to ride?
Chris Doyle. Mike Aitken. If I am feeling nostalgic Ill watch the old rad videos or the first props.
My friend Bob. He runs trails and Eric Cycleworks in Hamburg.

What do you listen to while you ride?
No Warning: Ill blood every time I ride. A lot of black flag and misfits.

Do you feel safe riding brakeless in the city?
No not at all. I ride freewheel and the general population of Buffalo doesn’t know how to drive.

How do you rate Buffalo for riding?
6/10 for spots. Where I live I give my community a 9/10. Not a lot of unity. Very cliquey. Most kids ride park because that’s all they feel buffalo has to offer. I don’t ride park.

What are you looking forward to most?
More tricks. Working on 360’s and wallrides. Fine tuning. Hopwhips. Also just hanging out with friends meeting new people and taking on the next challenge that the next day brings.

What's the best moment you had while riding?
Riding trails everyday when I was 16.

What influenced your riding today?
Skateboarded for 6 months. There was a skateshop in hamburg and there was a rivalry between the skateshop and bike shop. The oweners of the skateshop had beef because they were going to start selling bikes. The bike shop was next to my house so I started hanging there and the owner was more of a mentor to me because he wasn’t doing drugs and he really gave me the momentum and thought to ride bmx and through the beef I started riding Bmx.

I raced bmx 2 years broke my arm then quit. Hit the jump and they had changed it that day so I wasn’t used to it. I went straight up and straight down. Broke my arm, six stitches, and knocked out. It was right before the championship. Placed 5th in the ameteur seris. Next year I placed fourth.

What other things are you involved in?
Music as much as I can be. I work at a café and I am a chef there. Going to school is a waste of money if you are good at something you don’t need school.

Travel?
Anywhere! Chicago within the next year and new york city.

Final thoughts?
Lately I have been pushing for sponsors riding more and pushing my limits. It has been rewarding everytime I ride learning something new about myself. In a perfect world: Odyyseyy/Sunday.

Buffalo Rider Spotlight: Roy Draves

What part of the city are you from and how old are you?

Roy: From Love Joy and 17.

Favorite part of the city to ride in?
Roy: I like the Eastside, High St. There's a lot of really fun hills. I like to pretend I am in Mash all day everyday.

How is your bike set up?
Roy: It's so shitty. 54cm Windsor Clockwork decked out with reflective tape over the logos with Soma dropbars. Drops all the way. Oury grips on top. Some Alex wheels. Stem is a nub thing. Half the stuff on my bike doesn't have a name on it. My ratio is 48:17

What's the best moment you had while riding?
Roy: Riding to Niagara Falls with Billy. It was a really pleasant day. There was a great energy to it. I woke up with a smile on my face and went to sleep with a smile on my face. It is 56 miles round trip from my house. The feeling the next day was great. It gave me the confidence to realize 20 miles isn't so bad.

Did you ride before riding fixed?
Roy: Yeah, I started riding on a blue road bike when I was 14. I have been riding fixed for 2 and a half years now. I used to hate fixed gears. I hated the way it felt, but then Landon and Billy got them. I gave it more of a shot and I like how much more control I have. I think more with my feet than my hands now.

How do you feel about riding through Buffalo winters?
Roy: Everyone should try it once. If you have somewhere to be don't let it stop you from getting there. Just dress right . I ride my bike how it is set up during the summer same as winter. 700cx23 with crappy Gatorskins.

Who or what inspired you to ride?
Roy: Originally it was drive to get out and see things. Its the best way to clear your head and think. Then it snowballed from there.

What do you listen to while you ride?
Roy: Pop punk or Paramore. A lot of Paramore or when I am tired more ambient music. Usually I ride to the music.

Do you feel safe riding fixed brakeless?
Roy: I feel like I have complete control. I can stop as quick as anyone with a brake. I love the focus it brings. It also comes with the control factor, but it's control you have to gain.

How do you rate Buffalo for riding?
Roy: Considering I have never ridden anywhere else I give it an 8/10. I like the community.

What are you looking forward to most?
Roy: Fall. Wearing a hoodie. Oh and a new bike. A Norco track frame.

What is your favorite part about the Buffalo bike scene?
Roy: Everyone knows everyone.

First Tuesday Ride A Success!

Tuesday night, a group nearing 30 participants collected on the tennis courts of North Buffalo's Shoshone Park.
As the sun sank deeper into the skyline, stragglers and late-comers joined the pack amassed at the park's interior. Just after 7 o'clock post meridian, the cyclists took to the streets, destined for a secluded, lackluster "skate"park in North Tonawanda. As the first stop of the ride was haphazardly chosen by Mr. Sperrazza, not many knew of location's existence, and even fewer knew riding directions. After an initial few awkward seconds, Steve ascended to the rank of leader, directing the bunch for a few miles of easy riding.
Riding there, the gang developed a good flow: Steve imparted directions, friends chatted, Bennett turned the mounded earth around trees into ramps, and newcomers discovered the attractive grace of mass rides. A quick twenty minutes was all it took to arrive at the ramp-infested estate. Once there, a few pictures were taken, the ramps were tested by the burly 40c tires of Bennett and Charles, and miniature discussions of bikes were had. As quickly as everyone had arrived, a new destination was chosen, and they were off once again.
This time headed for the cooling breeze of the water, the bunch made their way to Tonawanda's Mississippi Mudds, a restaurant facing Lake Erie, located on Niagara Street.
From there, the riders continued along the water, this time via the smooth blacktop of the Niagara bike path. A few short miles south, the thirty-pack stopped to admire the placid water and pose for a group picture. As the gang recollected, spirits were still high. It was at this point that the organizers of the first ever Tuesday night ride knew their plan had yielded success. From there, the group, along with yet another few add-ons, travelled farther down Niagara, turning left on Hertel.
It was around this point that the "group" nature became slightly disbanded, and people separated. Thanks in part to a couple flats, inpatient SUV-mongerers, and annoyingly-slim shoulders, many of the original riders had either lost the group or had called it a night and retired to their homes.
With still ten or twelve cyclists left, the group stopped for fuel at Mighty Taco, situated near the intersection of Delaware and Hertel. As Tex-Mex was inhaled, everyone was still in good shape and enjoying the cool summer evening.
From there, the majority of riders had said their goodbyes and ridden home. A small group opted for ice cream at Fowler's on Elmwood and set their proverbial sails towards the village.
So although the plans were shaky at best, it was pulled off with zero resistance or incident. Everyone was in the best of moods and no one got emotional about minor trivialities. This past Tuesday has proven, if nothing else, that riding your bike with some friends can be one of the best, easiest ways to have a good time.
For Tuesdays to come, expect more organization, more people, and more awesomeness. We meet at Shoshone Park, a stone's throw from Main and Hertel. All who possess two-wheeled transportation and a good attitude are welcome.

The second ride will go off at the same time as last week same meet up spot!

This Tuesday August 10th at 6:30pm we will be kicking off the first ride of our weekly rides. The plan is to meet at Shoshone Park at the tennis courts. These used to be our old polo courts if any of you remember. We encourage anyone on any bike to come and enjoy the ride which will be led by someone chosen at random at meet up time. So its not a bad idea to have some ideas stored up just incase you are the one leading! These will hopefully continue every week and be a nice addition to the Sunday night rides that go on every weekend.

Hey guys, I'll be making some posts on here now, whenever I think up some worthwhile shit to share with the world. My goals, as far as this blog, are simply to untie the local track bike scene and make it all that it can be.
Unlike my residentially-challenged co-poster Charlie, I'm rarely outside the Buffalo area, so I'm usually down to ride with anyone. Last night, Mr. Reinagel and I discussed possibly organizing a Wednesday night ride around the city, with the singular goal of having a good time.
We'll see what comes in the future, though. For now, I just wanted to introduce myself.
Expect to hear more in the near future!

Chris and I have been filming a bit lately for a new film he is putting together. From the looks of it so far things are going very well. We aren't even filming in HD yet and it looks amazing. Here is a small teaser:

Finally going to start to upload and put up some clips from last year that Bill filmed. I can upload one a week so the fim updates will be a weekly thing.

The Petal Pedal Alleycat will be taking place on May 1st at 730 pm. Meet down at city hall. This is going to be a really fun one so I suggest everyone that can make it come out and have a blast either riding your hardest or just cruising with friends. There will be prizes from Campus Wheelworks for 1st, 2nd, 1st girl and so on.

After the race there will be a showing of Mash Sf at Soundlab that starts at 9:45. There will be tables for a few shops such as Campus and Buffalo Blue Bikes. Also Val from Campus is going to have top tube pads and other things at the table for people to look at and hopefully buy.

BUT thats not all after the film there will be a dance party at Soundlab as well.

Cost $6 to race w/ free admission to Mash Sf and Spiral Pitch. $6 at door for everyone that didn't participate in the race. If you run a checkpoint you are covered and able to get in free.

We are working on getting it up and have fronted he money for the site and everything. We are looking for a little bit of help though. The site cost a bit of money and we were hoping that some of you could help us out with a couple of dollars just to get us back to slightly below even. The forum is going to be free to everyone and promote things such as trades and selling of bike parts, local events ( bike and non bike related), general bike talk, and tons of other things. So I talked about posting pictures about a week ago and now finally I am able to get onto the internet and get them up. Here they are:

That was when it was a bit nicer out! Looking forward to those kind of days here in Buffalo. Winter has been pretty rough and these past two days have been absolutely freezing. It hit -3 today with the wind chill.

Rusty, rusty, rusty! Luckily I found some Thrust in the basement of my house hat cleans off all rust. It really worked great.

I am finally working in the darkroom and getting my film stuff. I am planning on scanning some negatives this week and getting some black and white work up here.
Mike D and I are meeting up tomorrow morning/ afternoonish to get the bike tag cards made and laminated. They are going to be featuring art from a few different sources put together and will have the rules on the back of the cards!

Clearing Things Up

I want everyone to know that DF is a collective project that anyone in the Buffalo area can be a major part of. I welcome everyone's thoughts and ideas. I want peoples help with this.

For instance since this Bike Tag idea formed Mike has been a great deal of help and tons of fun to be around. We have a lot in the works and could use some help. So if you want to get involved get a hold of me!

Also I've run into Benji a lot lately and his Capture the Flag on bikes idea has sparked yet another fun game that is being worked on right now. Another main contributor to this idea was Jess Mills.

It's Official!

Bike Tag is a hit! The cards are almost all gone and out in Buffalo waiting to be accompanied by the dreaded red spoke cards. I tagged two people today and got the game rolling. Also the facebook event that I started now has 64 members eager to get involved. Some have cards and some speak of wanting this game spread to their cities. As of right now my buddy Matt in Philly is getting a group of people to start it up sometime next week. This is all so exciting not only for me, but also for everyone else involved. Anyone that wasn't able to get a card head to Campus Wheelworks (http://campuswheelworks.com/) as soon as possible to pick one up there are only a few left there. Mike D. and I will be making up more spoke cards next week that have the rules on the back and then shoving them in everyone and anyone's spokes.

Bummer..

So I was going to post a bunch of old photos that I got around to editing last night while eating delicious roasted marshmallows dipped in fondue chocolate, but I just realized I no longer have a card reader because the Fedexkinkos employee that printed out the Bike tag spoke cards for me neglected to return my card and the reader I supplied with it. A little upset at my own loss, but I am so happy that people really like the bike tag idea. I have handed out around 30 cards now. They all don't have owners, but will in the next couple of days. I think about 13 people are riding with the green game cards now. Tomorrow I am going to tag someone and get this game out of my hands and into the participants. Again if you tag someone it would be really nice to give them a small prize. Such as a piece of candy, a dollar bill, etc. I will have the photos up tomorrow hopefully.

Also we are working on a short trailer for the March All City race. It should be up in the next week or so. Keep an eye out!

Word on the street is:
Bike Polo starts this Saturday. I'll have more info up when I know a bit more.

Bike Tag!

Last night a few friends (Mike D. and I) I got together and came up with what we think is an original game. Maybe not...

So here is how we are going to play. Everyone who wants in on the game gets a special spoke card that denotes they are a participant in the game of tag. Then there is one card that is the orange "You're it" card. All but one person start out with the green hiding cards. Through out the course of the day, week, month, year, however long the game lasts the person who has the it card has to tag another player when they see their bike locked up somewhere in the city. This person becomes it and then has to tag someone else. Also for a little bit more fun the tagger has the option of leaving a note on the persons bike. Maybe something cool to do, a phone number, or even a little prize for the person they just tagged.

I am going to get the spoke cards made up today. Anyone from Buffalo who wants in on this get a hold of me. Email or something and I will try to get a spoke card to you today!

Jerksgiving Photos

Well it certainly took me a long time to get these up seeing the race happened around Thanksgiving. I don't know why it took me so long. Maybe it was a general lack of interest in the photos when I first reviewed them. Sometimes that's what it takes to really connect with a few images. Forget about them until they come to you. Word on the street is there is going to be a race coming up in March. Keep an eye out for a post about it sometime in the near future.

Also some good news to speak of. It is almost warm out and all you fair weather riders can return to the streets! I am so excited to be joined by the swarms of people that let their bike sit in the basement all winter and collect dust. I guess that is probably better for your bike though. You can always wipe dust off. The salt and dirt that is caked all over my bike probably isn't doing it any good. Oh and the rust... Geez I don't even know what to do about that. It has been so lonely on the streets that I have begun singing on my rides.

Get out and ride! 3am

At 3 this morning Chris and I decided to take a nice little ride which started by picking a road and riding to the end of it. This is how our trip panned out:

The first half of the ride was great and fast, but the end was quite disturbing. Fighting against the most annoying wind. It was blowing in a manner that going 3 directions you had to fight it. I don't quite understand, but it happened.

Ground covered:

22 miles
4 or 5 cemeteries
1 Tim Hortons
1 Mobil Gas station
1 Massive Pothole
and 3 Lies.

If we can't find a ride to Philadelphia for Thursday we are embarking on an adventure to Philadelphia by patching metro buses and riding our bikes. Not sure how it will work out, but I sure hope we make it out with no frostbite and great stories. Preferably would like a ride to Philly if anyone is interested. We have a place to stay set up and money for gas if necessary..

Everything is coming together.

Positive Approach is now officially a fully functional print shop as well as a storefront. We have moved in our two four-color presses and one one-color press. We have an unnecessary four dryers. Our sign is soon to be displayed outside for all to see. We have had it in the window since opening because we didn't have a set plan for rigging it up outside. Now we have decided to place it on the roof which should be cool and bring much more attention to the store.

The printing department has been doing very well. We have completed one job and have two more in print right now along with countless jobs in the works. I couldn't be anymore excited right now.

We finally got our gas turned on today too, but unfortunately the heater won't heat up :(. (I had to take a break from typing and now that I am revisiting this the heater has been fixed! I hear it works really well) I guess that means we will be getting a newer more efficient heater anyways. I guess I can let the others suffer in the cold shop while I am away in Florida. Speaking of that...

I am head to Florida at 4 am tomorrow morning. It is sure to be a good time because my buddy Matt who runs http://sevenonefixed.blogspot.com/ is letting me borrow his bike case. Lots of pictures and biking going to be happening.

Here are some pictures of the printing equipment. Unfortunately these don't show how much fun we were having on our first night with a working station.

This is Jay's equipment set up in the shop. Although he personally owns the press it is open for use by all three printers.

Joe's print equipment haphazardly set up. This is what we printed on last night and it was tons of fun. The table tipped every time you got to the end of the screen which made for a couple of us around holding the table down every once in a while.

Here are some screens and Joe cleaning the metal ones out. We aren't planning on using the wood ones much, but they sure do look cool.

Welp time to shower up and head off to Florida. Plenty more to come upon my return.

We are meeting up at Hoyt Lake at 2 pm to play a few games which the winners will be rewarded prizes. Then we will head to Positive Approach for the start of the race at 3 pm!

Snow!

So excited to get this snow on the ground stuck and ready to ride. I am still fine tuning my winter riding gear. I probably should invest in some new snow pants that aren't baggy and wont get caught in my chainring every five feet.

Well I started to write about snow last night and thats where I left off because I ran out of time. Tonight it snowed and now at 1 am I am going to my first snow ride. Its only a couple inches, but thats good enough for a ton of fun!

Awesome. Maybe Ill take some pictures.

Opening Party!

There has been so much going on lately! I have been neglecting this blog simply because work is a higher priority right now, but now that I have sometime to post I might as well.

We are opening Positive Approach on Saturday the 15th of November and everyone is welcome to come out and party. It is going to be tons of fun. Debuting a few shirt that are going to be selling for a little below there normal cost. One of those being the Ridden shirt!

Also I will be attending a fashion show of sorts here in Buffalo on the 14th to promote the new Ridden line. We have some more shirts in the works, but nothing we are going to reveal just yet.

Been a while since I have had a chance to get online for more than a few minutes. Even now I am posting from my phone while pooping at work... Ha. Well anyway we have been so much time on Positive Approach that we haven't been doing much bike related filming. We still are riding plenty as always. Love those early morning rides to work. On to bike news. We have a trailer in the works that should be done pretty soon. I can't wait to start riding in the snow and to film and take pictures. Should make for an awesome time. Well I am pulling this poop a bit to long. Back to painting this house an ugly color.

Not much of a fan. Cool place and all, but the crime here is just out of hand. A buddy of mine has had some terrible luck here. He was robbed at gunpoint for his bike while with his girlfriend. He got blindsided by some punk teenage kids while riding and was almost thrown off his bike. How much does that suck? Well anyway while I have been in Philly I have gotten a few things done other than seeing the people I want to before I head to Buffalo for good. Well not for good, but for a while as I finish out my degree and run Positive Approach with 3 of my best friends. I have continued to edit shots from a while back, printed out flyers and cut them by hand to hand out to people on the street here or stick in peoples spokes, and most importantly meet up with owners of a few shops and gotten the go ahead to ship out shirts to them to sell and or to promote our shop. Things have been going really well and when I get back I am going to spend a hell of a lot of time cleaning that storefront up. Well enough of this talk I really got on here to post some photos.

We all signed the DBA today for Positive Approach. There were mixed plans today to film, play bike polo, or design. Didn't film. I was the only one to show up to bike polo. We did get some work done on the design end though. We are in the process of building the website and I am working with the t shirt design for Delicious Fixicious. Julia and I fit in sometime to take some photos between bike polo and getting the DBA authorized. Unfortunately she did not have time to work with many of the shots we got today. I on the other hand edited a shot of Bill filming Joe.

Also a few nights ago messing around in my basement.

We will be getting up shots of Steve and Bills bikes soon with some more info on what they are riding.

Ah and I shouldn't forget to mention Joe picked up some materials for the storefronts sign. We will be getting that painted hopefully early next week. I am sure we would get it done sooner, but I am going to Philadelphia to connect with some shops and get the name out. Mainly I am headed to Philly to pick up the rest of my stuff from my apartment though.

Oct 12th Filming at Gallaghers

Here are some photos from the day. Lots of fun. Spent about 6 hours on filming riding and shooting today. Joe and I came up with our first design for a shirt. Around 9 we headed over to Mighty Taco for some dinner with friends. After Steve, Bill, Matt, Eric, and I did the Sunday Midnight Ride. Always iffy, but tonight wasn't half bad. Well enough of the chit chat here are the photos I spoke of earlier.

We are going to be doing a mix of filming involving a point and shoot camera, digital video camera, and a freakin amazing HD camera (most footage going toward a final film.) Bill is going to be filming with the HD camera because thats simply what he does and I (Charlie) will be filming with the other two cameras. Maybe Joe will jump in and shoot some too!

A store.

Hey guys.

So what seemed to be a wild plan to open up a store/ custom screen print shop (one of many over these months) is quickly becoming scary real and serious. It is probably one of the most exciting things in my life. I suddenly realize how important it is to make this happen. It has way too much potential to be successful to not happen.

The point of the story and relation to posting this update on a bike blog is that this was mainly influenced by the FAST FRIDAY video. Dustin's (owner Cadence Clothing) success in the Seattle bicycle scene is very beneficial.

With full DIY mentality in play, this shop will be based around positive living, bikes, and green life.
